HEMP - A New Skincare Hero.

Hemp is the newest skincare hero, and here's what you need to know about it.

  • Hemp, a rising star on the beauty scene, is being heralded as the next big thing in skincare.

  • Hemp is currently regarded as a holy grail ingredient in skincare. What's not to love about it? It moisturizes without clogging pores, is high in antioxidants, and has anti-inflammatory properties. But, for all of its benefits, the ingredient raises a slew of questions. So, what exactly is hemp? Is it similar to marijuana? Is it even permissible? So, here's everything you need to know about this fantastic skincare ingredient.

    What exactly is hemp?

"The hemp plant is a subspecies of the cannabis plant (scientifically known as Cannabis sativa), which is commonly referred to as 'weed' or marijuana." The hemp used in skincare and cosmetics, on the other hand, has no psychoactive properties because it lacks tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)," explains Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Medical Director & CEO, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic. After harvest, the hemp used in cosmetic and wellness products is obtained by cold pressing the seeds.

    Is hemp legal to grow?

One of the most frequently asked questions about hemp is its legality. While hemp and cannabis are scientifically similar, they are legal—and logically—two different things, according to Dr Patel. "When compared to cannabis, hemp has a very low percentage of THC—the component that causes intoxication when consumed." Consumption of cannabis fruit and flower is prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. We, on the other hand, only use the seeds, leaves, and stems, which is completely legal and safe."

    A standout ingredient

While we've only recently discovered the benefits of hemp, there's a reason why this high-quality source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants has been used for centuries. According to Megha Asher, COO and Co-Founder of Juicy Chemistry, which also sells hemp-based products, hemp oil is one of the few oils with a comedogenic rating of zero. "Because it does not clog pores, it is a skincare favourite." Aside from that, the oil is high in a variety of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins E, C, and B3. Furthermore, the hemp seed oil is high in essential fatty acids like oleic (omega 9) and linoleic (omega 6). It moisturizes the skin and scalp while also balancing sebum production." Dr Patel describes it as a multipurpose oil that can be used on the hair and skin for rejuvenation and weather protection. He also suggests combining it with essential oils. "Combine hemp seed oil and essential oils such as rosemary, tea tree, chamomile, or lavender." The concoction can also help with dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. For best results, use the oil alone or in combination with essential oils."

With its numerous beauty benefits, it's no surprise that hemp is being hailed as a wonder drug—pun intended—in your beauty routine. If you want to incorporate it into your routine, here are a few products to get you started.
